Developmental Training (Ages 3-21 years)
The William M. BeDell Achievement and Resource Center provides community-based educational services to individuals with severe/profound and multi-handicaps, who are three to twenty-one years of age. The primary handicapping characteristics of students enrolled in the program is severe/profound mental retardation. Secondary characteristics may include physical impairments, visual and/or hearing impairments, and health impairments.
Referrals are made through the local school district where the student resides. An assessment by the ARC interdisciplinary team is completed and accompanies the referring district's formal evaluation/case study. Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are written based on the complete assessment/evaluation results, informal observations, parental concerns, and reports from other agencies. Annual reviews of the IEP are conducted with local school districts and parents. Staffings to discuss student needs are held when necessary.
Student programs are based on seven areas of training: communication skills, self-help skills, cognitive skills, motor skills, social skills, prevocational skills, and leisure/recreation skills. A certified teaching staff is responsible for developing and implementing individualized classroom goals. Support service specialists assist the teacher in forming goals designed to facilitate the student's communication and oral motor skills, adaptation of equipment, therapeutic positioning, and behavior enhancement techniques.
Accredited by NCA, the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Contact Cheryl A. Blaha, Program Director, for more information.
